VAPOUR TRAILS

(First published in “Winged Words” September 1977)

Tiny dot of shiny bright
way up in the winter light
I see a shiny arrow
trailing vapour, feather white.

High above the houses oh
leaving Winter far below
speedy DC8 or Boeing
wonder where YOU’re going, oh …?

Will the air be cleaner there
life perhaps serener there
- as they say in  airline adverts
will the grass be greener there …?

… I know where I’m going, yet
for a moment I forget
that I’m bound for Piccadilly
on a double-decker jet …
